Washington Juvenile Cases at a Glance

Stage General Rule
Juvenile jurisdiction Generally concerns an offense committed before age 18, subject to transfer and adult-jurisdiction rules
Detention Requires statutory grounds; a held youth generally receives a detention hearing within 72 hours, excluding weekends and holidays
Diversion Generally available for a legally sufficient first misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, or violation, subject to statutory exceptions
Deferred disposition A separate court option with eligibility limits, a plea or finding, supervision, and compliance requirements
Adult-court transfer Limited to listed circumstances and requires the applicable decline process
1

What to Do After a Juvenile Allegation

Keep the citation, summons, release paperwork, hearing notice, and any written conditions. Confirm the date, time, and attendance instructions on the latest court notice. Preserve messages, video, school records, photographs, and witness information that may relate to the allegation.

Avoid deleting or changing evidence. A prompt case review can identify who the lawyer represents, what the next hearing involves, and which questions require immediate attention.

2

Juvenile Court Requires Its Own Defense Strategy

Washington generally defines a juvenile as a person under 18 who has not been transferred or otherwise placed under adult-court jurisdiction. Juvenile court may retain jurisdiction for a qualifying offense committed before age 18 when the information is filed before age 21. The terminology, process, and possible outcomes differ from adult court. Clark County Juvenile Court provides separate information for offender dockets, detention, diversion, deferred disposition, records, and other programs.

3

Evidence a Juvenile Defense Lawyer May Review

Counsel may examine statements, searches, phone or social-media evidence, school or witness information, recordings, identification evidence, and whether the State can prove each element of the allegation. The minor's age, procedural history, and the way evidence was obtained can also matter. These issues help define the questions that should be investigated before major decisions are made without promising a particular result.

4

Diversion and Other Possible Resolutions

Washington law generally directs diversion for a legally sufficient first misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, or violation, subject to statutory exceptions and related charges. A diversion agreement is a contract in lieu of prosecution, and the youth has a right to counsel before the initial diversion interview and at critical stages.

Deferred disposition is a different court process with statutory exclusions, a plea or finding, supervision, and compliance requirements. VanWa Legal can evaluate the allegation, history, evidence, and proposed terms with the minor and family.

5

Guidance for Parents and a Defense for the Minor

Parents can help by organizing documents, preserving evidence, tracking hearing information, and making sure the minor follows current court conditions. Washington law provides a youth access to counsel at critical stages and requires attorney consultation before specified custodial questioning, probable-cause detention, or consent-to-search requests.

The lawyer's client, confidentiality duties, and decision-making roles should be explained at the beginning of VanWa's representation.

6

MIP, Minor DUI, and Juvenile Defense Are Different

A broad juvenile-defense page does not replace the firm's focused services for a minor-in-possession allegation or a minor DUI. Those matters involve separate elements and possible license issues. Age alone also does not establish which court or legal track applies.

Counsel should review the specific allegation and current paperwork.

7

Juvenile Defense in Clark County

Clark County Juvenile Court currently publishes hybrid attendance information and separate offender docket resources. In-person attendance may still be required. Families should follow the latest notice and use the court's official information to confirm location and appearance instructions.

VanWa Legal handles juvenile criminal and dependency proceedings, while this page remains focused on defense of criminal allegations. The firm meets clients at its downtown Vancouver office and can review the paperwork before the next court event.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I hired Roger to represent my husband when he was arrested on false charges. From the very beginning, Roger was responsive, knowledgeable and willing to take on the case. He was the only one to return my call when I was searching for help. He is very confident in his ability and worked hard to get all the charges dismissed. He is able to be calm in situations where his clients are anything but. I am so grateful for the services provided by Roger. He is very respected in the legal community here in Vancouver. I hope I never need a lawyer again, but if I did, Roger would be my first choice.

I am writing a much overdue review for Roger Priest after he has gone above and beyond while representing me as my lawyer. Last year I found myself facing legal difficulties after my first and only DUI. While the circumstances were incredibly stressful, Roger's involvement in my case made the process straight forward and my case was resolved in a timely manner. Roger is exceptionally proficient in cases like mine and he demonstrates that in and out of the court room. Not only did he walk me through the process but he put my family's concerns at ease by answering all of our questions and making himself available whenever we needed clarification. I was very fortunate to have Roger on my side during that difficult time and would highly recommend his services to anyone that finds themselves in need of legal counsel. Thank you once again, Roger!

I met Roger at the start of 2025, somehow after I paid for a fender bender that I caused I was hit with a hit and run little did I know when I had a warrant two years after the incident. As of today my case was entirely dismissed without even going to trial. I couldn't be happier with the results and couldn't vouch for a different lawyer. Every time we had a court date, we were the first ones on and promptly the first case handled. Roger Priest is the man- I would highly recommend you give him a call if you are experiencing trouble.

Roger handled my case promptly and painlessly. We are from out of state and had spoken with quite a few attorneys in the area before we made the trip. Roger was middle of the road cost-wise (which was truly fair) and was clearly competent, handling the case in one trip over as oppose to the two or even three trip process many of the others were communicating would be the case. I would hire again without a second thought. Thanks again Roger.

Roger Priest is professional, intelligent and experienced, you can tell by the way he holds himself in court. Out of the 21 lawyers I interviewed and compared on an excel spreadsheet. I put my trust in Roger and he didn't let me down.

Roger Priest was my Criminal Attorney for a DUI case I had in 2018. Through out the whole process he was in contact and always was reassuring! He gave his honest opinion on rather or not if my case would be worth going to trial, which is hard to come by! Today I left the courtroom a free man to come home to my family with a lot of tension lifted off my shoulders because of how he was articulate and presented my defense. I am very lucky to have him in my corner and to be spared. I will take this experience as a wake up call because these opportunities don't come too often! Mr. Priest definitely deserves a 5 star rating for his devotion and overall performance.

Roger Priest was referred to me by another lawyer (who could not take my case). Out of the 3 lawyers I reached out to Mr. Priest was willing to hear my case and not just try and convince me to take the easy route and plead out. He was informative, honest, and very tactical (in his approach with my case). Mr. Priest not only kept me updated with his plans and what to except he involved me in every aspect I could be in. He was very approachable and kind. I won my case, I wouldn't have if I had gone with another lawyer. I am very satisfied with having had Roger Priest defend me. I hope to never have to use his services again but definitely would rehire him again (I wish I could hire him as my divorce attorney).

I recently consulted Roger for my first and only legal matter. He explained at length the legal ramifications that i was facing and he listened closely to all my questions and concerns. He was very attentive and empathic towards my situation and did not rush through things. I would highly recommend Roger to anyone I know seeking legal representation.

FAQ

Juvenile Defense Questions for Families

What should a parent do after a child receives a citation or court notice?

Keep every document, confirm the hearing instructions, help the minor follow current conditions, preserve relevant evidence, and arrange a case-specific review before making assumptions about the process.

Is juvenile court different from adult criminal court?

Yes. Juvenile proceedings use their own rules, terminology, programs, and possible outcomes. The exact process depends on the allegation, age, history, and current court papers.

Can a juvenile case be handled through diversion?

Diversion may be available in some cases. Eligibility and consequences depend on the allegation, history, local program, and completion requirements. A lawyer should review the proposed terms before the family relies on that option.

Is an MIP or minor DUI automatically a juvenile-court case?

Age and the specific allegation affect the legal track. Under-21 laws and juvenile-court jurisdiction are different. Review the dedicated MIP or minor-DUI page and have counsel confirm which court applies.

Where is Clark County Juvenile Court?

Use the latest court notice and Clark County Juvenile Court's official page to confirm the location and whether the appearance is in person, remote, or hybrid.
